Given the breadth and diversity of the microbial sciences field, there are multiple federal agencies and programs that influence the work of ASM and its members. The chart below, compiled by ASM’s Policy team, provides additional information on the funding levels across these agencies, from current levels, to the President’s FY 2022 budget request, to the most up-to-date FY 2022 Congressional proposals. You can explore how the FY 2022 request and proposed funding levels compare with the current, FY 2021 enacted funding levels. The chart provides a glimpse into both the White House’s and Congress’ priorities as they relate to the microbial sciences and infectious disease.

Note: In the wake of COVID-19, there were multiple supplemental funding bills enacted to  provide additional, emergency funding in FY 2021 and beyond. These funds primarily have been directed to the National Institutes of Health's (NIH) National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA).
